IVMB sim lab

Intravenous Medication Sim Lab. This is important to know for both the Sim lab and any PCS bcause it is Likey that an IV med will be assigned there also too.
As always we start with complying with established guide lines R/T med administration. This includes, what is clean must stay clean and what is sterile must stay sterile, the Rights of med administation, which are, the right dose, route, patient, time, and med.
As I approach the Sim Lab table tere will be a choice of medications to choose from. I must use the MAR and select the correct one. Next (as always) Identify the patient immediately before administering med by verifying two of the following three: Name, DOB, and medical record number. So I will hold up the MAR and compare it to the Patient Id band, saying outloud the info I am comparing. Do not be foolsih and think that you only have to ID that patient once during your grreting. If you give meds 4 times then ID them each time!!!
Using perscribed route/site for administering med. This is where reading the order three times will come in useful.
Administer designated med to designated patient.
When IV med is to be adm by secondary method( IVMB) Records correct flow rate in drops per minute on Simulation Laboratory Recording Form before adm med.
Assess the IV insertion site immediately before adm med for dislocation, inflitration,or other complications by either 1) feeling the surrounding skin for changes in temp or 2) palpating surrounding tissue for edema.
Clear the air from the tubing before initiating flow. There will already be a bag hanging up when you arrive at this station . The easiest wayto do this is to open the clamp and allow the main IV fluid to "back flow " up the secondary IV line tubing. This way the medication is not lost.
Regulate flow to deliver prescribed amount in designated time (-/+ 5 drops per minute)To regulate, open the secondary IV line clamp fully and to adjust with the primary clamp only!!!!
Record on the MAR when you are satisfied with the rate. Do not screw it up now by forgetting this!!!
Maintain aspepis. This means if you think you contaminated the tubing, verbalize it and change that tubing!!
Copletes all critical elements in 20 minutes.
